D'ORO COLLECTION ENTERING THE WORLD OF ART WITH D'ORO D'ART
A new project has come to life at D'ORO Collection. We are calling it a project because it is not just one more title which adds to the renowned Collection, but a book that opens up into so much more.
D'ORO D'ART, the name is enough to understand that the iconic gold covers are there to protect a true form of art.
D'ORO D'ART originates from a visionary idea by Salvatore Giorgio Dino, CEO of the Publishing House. For many years he dreamt of a project capable of creating a "transcendental" book addressing every individual in the world, overcoming all language barriers.
"I knew that art could be the universal key to this challenge. And making the first handmade book in history that features digital art inside was the revolution that only D'ORO could imagine ... " says Salvatore, visibly excited for the upcoming worldwide launch.
Barbara London and Valentino Catricalà, the curators of the project, selected Dara Birnbaum, one of the most important pioneers of video art, as the first artist for this special collaboration and D’ORO D’ART will launch this project at Art Basel Miami Beach in collaboration with Marian Goodman Gallery.
Dara Birnbaum has exclusively re-imagined her ground- breaking multi-screen video, Arabesque, (2011), in the context of Italian bookbinding techniques.
Birnbaum’s Arabesque reflects on the legacy of two piano compositions: Arabesque Opus 18, composed by Robert Schumann for his wife Clara, and Romanze 1, Opus 11, composed by Clara Schumann for her husband Robert. Birnbaum’s work highlights the contrast in public receptions that these compositions have received throughout history. Arabesque juxtaposes video clips of respective performances of the compositions culled from YouTube. These performances, presented contrapuntally, are set against still footage from the 1947 film ''Song of Love," a melodrama that features Robert Schumann’s composition, widely recognized as a masterpiece. Clara Schumann's work of similar virtuosity has been largely forgotten.
Over the past four decades, Dara Birnbaum's video, media, and installation work has addressed the ideological importance and the aesthetic character of mass media imagery. Her works juxtapose video imagery from multiple sources while integrating three dimensional elements - large-scale photographs, sculptural, and architectural elements - into the work. She is known for her groundbreaking strategies, including the use of manipulated television clips and, more recently, imagery sourced from the Web.
D'ORO D'ART combines the most sophisticated techniques of Italian bookbinding with the world of art through innovative experimentation. It is a work of art but at the same time a book, a sculpture and an installation.
The three covers of the book are made from gilded, serigraphed and lacquered aluminum. Unlike a classic book, the three covers open like a triptych. Glossy and iridescent silk is used both as a book lining and as a video backdrop - as a leitmotif and anchor with the past.
Art Basel Miami Beach runs from November 30 to December 4, 2021 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Marian Goodman Gallery is located at Booth D6. A single channel re-edit of Arabesque (created from Birnbaum’s original 2011 four-channel installation and commissioned by Art Basel), will be screened at the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center at SoundScape Park (400 17th St) at 8PM on Saturday 4 December.
